You will want to disable any unnecessary software from starting when you boot up your computer.

The easiest way is to ensure there are no items in your startup folder (located through start/programs/startup.

Then, reboot your computer, and notice how many items load into your system tray (the bottom right corner).

If you have things like weatherbug, yahoo or msn messenger, aol, etc. (basically anything but protection software), you will want to open each one up individually, go to the settings or options, and uncheck the boxes (or check them, depending) that say "run on startup" or "start with windows" or anything similar to that.

You do not need these programs to start at startup. Essentially, what most of these programs do is log you in automatically, or load half the software so that when you want to use it, it loads up faster.

For experienced users (BE CAREFUL!) you can go to start/run and type "msconfig" without the quotes and hit enter.
Navigate to the startup tab and uncheck the box next to any program THAT YOU ARE SURE you do not want to start on startup. DO NOT UNCHECK ANY BOXES YOU ARE UNSURE OF!!

Adding another program to the start up only slows it down.

Remove unneeded programs and go from there.
