factor 2(x+4) / (x+4) and cancel the common factor x+4

you get 2 for all x such that x not= -4

(2x+8) / (x+4) = ( 2*(x+4))/(x+4)
= 2 * (x+4)/(x+4)
= 2 * 1
= 2

factor out a 2 from 2x + 8 which makes the fraction....

2(x+4)
---------
x+4

Now you can cancel out x+4.
So the fraction is actually equal to 2!
