Completely normal. It's actually the most fertile time of the month (that's why you get cramps---you're ovulating). It's your body's way to get you to reproduce.

Blame it on all of the horomones coursing through your body.
Having an orgasm is supposed to HELP with crampswhen you have it.

actually I find orgasms help relieve cramps
btw you are not the most fertile a couple days before your period, you're most fertile 2 weeks before! (ovulation)
AND, you're estrogen is highest the first 2 weeks of your cycle, so that's not it

I would guess it's normal... My girlfriend is often more horny when her period is due or thereabout. Its probably completely natural.
