Firstly to correct some implications from above, it was not a Jewish uprising, unless you are referring to the 1943 Warsaw ghetto rising. The Polish resistance, the Armia Krajowa, took on very few Jews because they had mostly been removed and those that remained would have been too conspicuous to the Germans.

As for the Warsaw Uprising, it was a very tragic event. The approach of the Red Army gave the Poles hope that they might finally be liberated. Unfortunately when they finally broke cover and started the uprising the Red Army stayed on the outskirts and did not help so the Polish resistance was crushed and over 60000 Poles were killed. The Red Army claimed they were not in a position to aid the Poles, but it is likely they let the Germans crush the resistance for their own benefit. There had been a long history of antagonism between the Russians and Soviets and Poland, not helped by Soviet massacring Poles earlier in the war. Furthermore, by letting the Germans weaken the Polish resistance, Stalin knew he would make a post-war Soviet occupation easier so really nothing but disgust can be felt about his role in the uprising. As for the other Allies, some attempts were made, particularly by Commonwealth airforces such as the RAF and RCAF, though much of this was symbolic and the supplies were insufficient and impeded by a lack of Soviet cooperation. The Allies' Western Leaders were also wary of offending Stalin, especially as the Yalta conference was coming up. Still you could justifiably feel disappointed that more wasn't done.

I know a lot of people confuse the Ghetto uprising of 1943 with the Warsaw uprising of 1944.
As for 1944, I have always thought ridiculous the argument of the Russians and their apologists that the Russians could not have intervened. So what if the Germans agree? They would say that, that they had halted the Russians - wouldn't they? Stalin cold-bloodedly let the Germans do his dirty work for him.

Hello,

We who kiss the butts of our government, kowtow and pay our exhorbitantly high taxes, knuckle under to all sorts of new laws that are against our beliefs, stab people in the back or not go to bat for them in work in case we get fined, lose our jobs and security or face some jail time or are frightened to help old people being beaten in the street ought not to be too crtical of people who were rounded up at gun point by a well disciplined and highly effecient military and state internal security machine. Could any of us have done better surrounded by a few dozen sub machine guns pointing at not just you but your family?

The hardest, saddest thing about this uprising was the fact that Warsaw was surrounded by the Russians and hearing about the fighting in the ghetto, they sat back and took a breather allowing the Germans to finish off the resistance before resuming their assault... mutual feeling about the Jews I suppose.

Still, that is a good lesson in the triumph of the human spirit.
I recommend a book by Leon Ursis called "Mila 18", all about life leading up to this battle, the battle itself and aftermath. A long read but once you get going you can't put it down.

Like everything else in WW2, it's a god awefull shame. The Russians stopped, for whatever reason, too short, the Germans sent in some SS Verbaende instead of Wehrmacht, and the rest of the world didn't really care what happened to the poor souls in Warsaw. History repeats itself all the time!

First was a Jewish final act of defiance that makes good story about resistance and some fo the survivors finally getting out, russians helped a bit. . Second was a strategic act that by Polish White army/home army that ended badly and some people blame Russian army and stalin for stopping out of range of Warsaw and letting Germans eliminate future political unreliable- Remember Katyn forest where russians NKVD killed same types of Polish middle class and political elites directly. This is not good publicity for American kids to learn about when teachers are trying to install Democrat/Marxist thoughts, Russian support. Most don't learn about Remagen prisoners starved by american captors either.

The notion that the Jews "took the Holocaust sitting down" is disgusting. YOU see how brave you are when you're naked and surrounded by fanatical murderers with machine guns and bull whips who herd tens of thousands into pits for casual execution.
YOU try to fight machine guns with your bare hands.
The Warsaw uprising: EVERY German they killed in this uprising was justified 100 times. The German Nazis were the most brutal executioners of all times.

Which one? The one in the Ghetto in 1943 or the one of the Underground Polish Army and Government in 1944?

There was a great TV miniseries about it.

It should have been a lesson to future governments about how far you can go in oppressing people during an occupation before they will start to fight back.

I doubt that George W Bush ever heard of it.
