I'm a bit hysterical here.

I just bought a mouse from a pet store to feed to my snake. But seconds after I opened the bag, the mouse leaped out and ran under my bed. I got down on the ground and searched for five minutes before I heard run out of my room and into a hallway closet. I dove for it and grabbed it but it-

BIT ME!

I let it go and blood dripped down my finger.

How do I know if I'm rabid or not... the pet store owner always sticks his hand inside the cage to grab mice, but I don't know what kind of infectants he uses.

P.S: I caught the ********* mouse and my snake had a good meal.

It is highly unlikely that the mouse had rabies, but unfortunately for you there are only two ways to find out if something has rabies.

1.) They start displaying the symptoms of rabies - by this time it is too late - the diesease will kill you at this point.
2.) Do an autoposy of the brain and see if it shows signs of degineration.

Since you already fed the rat to the snake there is no way to know either way.
Therefore, if you were to be truely caustions then you would begin the long and painful rabies treatment. (Since again there is no way to tell if something has rabies without killing it)

Good luck.

Don't assume the mouse is healthy just because it came from a pet store. I would definitely go see a doctor, or at least call the doctor to ask whether you should come in. But I don't know what they could do for you. It's my understanding (but I could be wrong) that you cannot test for rabies on a live person. But maybe there are other diseases they would test for. I wouldn't take any chances, there are some diseases that need to be caught before symptoms appear or you're screwed.

I gotta say, this is kinda funny, that mouse gave you what you deserve for feeding it to a snake! :o)

the mice in the pet store would never have rabies because they sell them as pets as well as for food. if your snake had eaten a rabid mouse, it too, would have caught rabies.

You DO NOT have rabies. mice are A. domesticated B. raised in large facilities with no access to anything infected C.they do not carry rabies and D. mice, if they are bitten or scratched by anything with rabies die immediately. you will live. it was just an unsocialized feeder mouse who was defending himself.

The chances of you getting rabies are astronomicaly small. Pet store mice have no chance of being infected prior to selling them and rabies virus dies below body tempeture so quit worrying and wear gloves next time!

biting you when it was scared was a natural defensive reaction for the mouse. There is no indication that the mouse would have been rabid based on what you said.
The pet store owner can put his hand in and not get bitten because he knows how to reach for the mice and not have have them in his hand before they have a chance to get him.
In your case with the mouse having run under the bead and you having to crawl in after you where at a disadvantage in being able to grab the mouse appropriately ans were probably sending out scent that you were excited or afraid.

Dude, my hope dropped when I read your last few words. I was hoping you still had the vermin so the vet could test to see if it had rabies. Call your Doc and see what he/she thinks. I would by all the mice from that same pet store and have them checked for rabies. If they are negative, you should be safe! Good luck!!

Just because it's not likely you should still have reported it to the pet store owner. Tell the health department, see what they have to say. Wash good with soap & water.

Good for your snake however not good for you because the only way to be safe and not sorry was to have the mouse checked , years back I got bit and could not catch the damn thing and they had to treat me for rabies right away to be on the safe side, once their are sytems the rate for survival is not good. I would call your local hospital asap and ask, Best Wishes

you do not have rabies. unless you are foaming at the mouth and feel horrible, you do not. as for the snake it should be fine. if you got had rabies the snake would have gotten it to from eating the mouse. maybe put some disinfectant on it and if it is still bad clean it with rubbing alcohol and if it is STILL bad go to the doctor. chances are that you and your snake will be fine.
