Motor oil will work just fine, especially if you're not looking for longevity. Old Harleys use to have an oil jet from the motor shooting on the chain. Motor oil will collect a lot of dirt, and it will sling off like the others have said. But the proper way of lubing a chain is to get it in the crevices, and then wipe off the extra. Any extra lube, weather motor oil or special chain lube wax, will collect dirt, and cause premature wear. Good luck and ride safe!

You can even use WD-40 as a lubricant alone, but it is good for cleaning a chain too. Just have to worry about it flinging off. Sounds like the bike is in rough shape if you're going to junk it, but I'd go with the advice on picking up a cheap can of chain lube. A few bucks and a little time might get some extra money out of the bike if you trade it in or sell it outright.

The proper chain lube is much better and will stay on the chain rather than fly off onto your trousers etc..its not expensive to buy a tin of it...good luck with the c50

The most important thing about chain maintenance is keeping it clean. The chains are internally lubes so lube is not that important.

I use WD40 to keep the chain clean. i also use simple green when it gets really messy.

I then use a light coat of Chain wax. put the chain was oon when the chain is warm. Then let it cool. less sliging this way.

Why not try a bit of chain wax that you can buy from your local bike shop. easy to use, doesnt fling of like the standard lubes.
I've been using chain wax for at least 6 years. Read directions before use as you need to warm up your chain before use..
You can use motor oil, but i wouldnt recommend it as you will only get a couple of mins out of it before it flings of.....

you can use motor oil but the majority will sling off the first time you ride the bike (along with slinging it all over your bike and your backside)...

buy a inexpensive can of chain lube at your local bike shop. this is made to be extra sticky and tends not to sling off as bad. should only be about $5.

Get a can of chain lube. It's more expensive, but easy to use.
If you want to use oil, don't use engine oil. It's not heavy enough. Use 80W90 gear oil. That's what Honda used to recommend for non O-ring chains.

I prefer the gear oil. It's messier, and needs to be done often, but my chains and sprockets hardly wear at all.

if your just going to junk it then yes you can use motor oil. Chain lube is much better. Motor oil will also get grim and dirt all over your bike when you chain slings it everywhere.

You can use WD-40 on the chain. Yes, some of it will fling off, but it'll do the job until you junk the bike.

Ride Safe!
