Yes, if you know what carrier it is going by, call their 800 number. At the automated menu, choose to speak to a representative. If that option doesn't exist, choose the 'track a package' option (or however that particular company phrases that option), and say 'help' or 'representative' or 'agent' to bypass the automated voice that will ask for the tracking number. Or just wait, and you'll eventually be transferred to a rep.
When you get to that representative, you can give them either the shipping or receiving address, and they will be able to pull up the package and tell you both the tracking number and the package's current status. I know this works for USPS, UPS, FedEx and DHL, as I've done it many, many times before. I'm positive it'll work for smaller shippers, too, as this is one of the most common problems they see, after lost or misdirected packages.

If you shipped via the United States Post Office, they will not track without a tracking number - I've tried, they don't do it. Not sure about FedEx and UPS.
