If you don't prefer both of them, what car do you recommend as a small family, low priced and reliable car?

They are not directly comparable.
Its not quite like asking whether a Golf GTi is better than a Ford Transit - they are both good at what they do, but what they do is not the same, so its not possible to say one is definitively better than the other.

However, the Fusion 1.6 has a conventional automatic transmission - which while slightly less fuel efficient than the automated manual transmission used by the Yaris M/M (and the similar system used by the Fusion 1.4 Durashift) is much smoother in operation, and easier to control in manoeuvring.

Do not buy a car with an automated manual transmission (e.g the Yaris M/M) without taking it for a long test drive (at least 1 hour), including both rural roads and stop-go urban traffic, to make sure you can live with the transmission's shortcomings.

No contest. Yaris the better car by a mile and far better after-sales service. I run a driving school and after a while we see a pattern emerging. With Fords, we see similar faults such as rear light cluster breaking down, heater packing up, indicator switch breaking down etc. But the frustrating thing is that all Ford agents will deny this even when we show them the evidence!

With the Yaris, it's much harder to see this emerging pattern. This is because nothing goes wrong!

By the way, you can also do much worse than a Hyundai Getz.

Without question the Yaris. The Fusion is one of the worst driving modern Fords there is. Too tall, too floppy and not nice in crosswinds. If you have any reason for wanting a Fordm go for the Fiesta rather than the Fusion. Me, I'd take the Yaris.

The new type yaris is as close to a BMW as you will get.So easy to drive and as shook off the old image as being boring.I am qualified in saying the Yaris is certainly the better buy.

To be honest the two cars aren't really comparable as one's 300cc less than the other. The Toyota will be the most reliable.

Recently bought a new Yaris and its brilliant.
Ford seems overpriced and not so nice to drive.

Never buy a Toyota. They have major probs with the gears, clutch and flywheel. Very expensive to fix. I had an Avensis, will never buy another Toyota, have also spoken to lots of other ex Toyota owners who say the same thing.
