Republicans talk about their idealized version of America... and that version seems to be in strong contrast to what the country is really like.

What is America really like?

america is a good country, but isn't as great as it once was.

we have lost respect in the eyes of other nations. we are feared by many- which is very different than respect and frankly is a poor substitute for the lack of respect people have for us.

we do have some who take advantage of the welfare and public aid system. but not to the extent that certain conservatives make it out to be. many of the people on food stamps today are soldiers and their families or people out of work due to the economy.

we are in a struggle because many of the younger baby-boomers (mostly early 40s) grew up not needing school to get a job. now we face people arguing that some jobs demand college when only high school is needed. these adults need to keep the job they have becuase they most likely won't find another one.

we have schools that are in chaos. We have the No Child Left Behind Act which many parents and teachers have said does more harm than good. It is a system that takes money from the places that need it most in an attempt to force them to 'shape-up'.
we have kids who drop out everyday. many because of the ridiulous rules that are unnessacary. even worse, we have kids graduate who can't read. somehow they are passed along without one of the most basic skills.
the root of this may be that education seems unimportant. the thinking is incorrect but instead of targeting the root - children being taught to not value education- these people are shunned and castigated.

our children have more stress than most other generations. our juvinile justice system is a hypocracy. until a person is in their 20s they are overly impulsive- neurologically, not by choice. if they commit a crime they are charged as adults. they are typically hurt in prison by older inmates and when they get out all they know is how to be a good criminal. but while they can make decisions to ruin their lives, they are given very little respect or privledges because they are only kids.

our healthcare system is terrible. our treatments are very good. but our citizens don't get the treatments often enough. other countries may not have our advanced medical procedures, but they ensure their people get whatever they have to offer. The bills are almost impossible to pay without insurance. even with insurance it can be difficult. lobbyists do well for their companies, but hurt the people who must entrust their lives to insuance companies and their policies.

we have many people who aren't happy. they love this country but it simply doesn't make them happy. when they explain what causes this displeasure they are called 'unpatriotic' or 'traitors'.

we can never come up with enough money to fix our problems, but we have no issues paying for a war that costs trillions of dollars even when we can't afford it.

we have debates on citizens rights. in a coutnry of freedom and equality people want to make certain groups of people more powerful than others, more entitled to things, and have more rights than others.
we have some people who think the government is a parentertal figure. they think we are like children who must be reigned in and told what is good for us. we would take away people's freedoms because we think they should live and live healthier than they are now. this is why people so not take responcibilty.when this nation first began it was debated on whether or not the common people should vote- we decided they should. why do we still question the common people's ability to think for themselves?

the love for this country boarders on nationalism. some love it so much they refuse to acknowledge its faults.

there is more, but this covers most of the issues

Well Lamp, democrat or republican...it is still the same heap of bs. So, the Dem's have taken congress for over a year now. Has our country suddenly become a great, wonderful place to be? So much more then 2004? Don't worry, when a Dem ends up in the whitehouse...nothing will change.

What is the coutry like? There are those who are hard working Americans who don't have time to parade around with posters in the street. Why? They are busy working jobs. Then, there are the Cindy Sheehans whose job seems to be protesting full time along with all the others who are transiently employed.

Well, PART of the problem is that Republican politicians DO live the Republican image. I don't mean that Republican voters are blind...but the politicians tend to put blinders on when it comes to things that don't fit the Republican image. If they can't see it, it doesn't exist, it's not a problem and it doesn't need to be addressed.

Ex: No child left behind. You can test kids all day long, to prove that they're getting a better education, but if you test so often that the teachers have no time to teach in the first place...the kids aren't getting that education. Schools are even cheating to bring up their over all scores...so apparently it's not working. A Republican politician would beg to differ, claiming the scores are proof that it is.

The entire Bush administration would like to believe the country supports them, even though the ratings show otherwise. They'd like to think we all believe we're in Iraq to fight the war on terror...while Bin Laden ran off to hide in Afghanistan...a war zone we've only heard about as a side note since 9/11.

Just a couple of examples. I'm sure there are plenty, AS there are with the Democratic ideology. We need more political parties in my opinion, just to keep each other in check.

Just a side note: Funny, isn't it...how the question wasn't really threatening, but staunch Republicans get instantly defensive just because you singled out 'Republicans'. I claim no party affiliation. I vote for who, and what I think is best and I don't care if the person is in the Tupperware party.

Republicans see all the great, wonderful things America is. We also never forget the brave people that have paid the ultimate sacrifices to make her that way. We love America. She's not perfect, but she's the best there is and we are free to change things with our votes. More than I can say for Syria, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, the former Saddam regime... GOD BLESS AMERICA and our troops that keep us free!!

You can easily find out what America is really like. All you need to do is turn off the computer, move to a small city at least 1,000 miles from Washington, D.C., and get a job. Work that job for a year and make some new friends....then you might get some idea about what America is really like. You won't find out spending your time here.

It's the most diverse country in the world. The real America is heterosexual and homosexual, it's white, black, brown, yellow, and red, it has a full range of political thought even though we only have a one party system, it is secular in it's government and governmental institutions but the people have the right to have their own PERSONAL beliefs about their deity, and it is comprised of people who all have their own ideas what family means whether it is in a nuclear family, an extended family or an alternative family.
The real America believes in the freedom to create their own definition of themselves.
With Republicans there is a heirachy which is antithetical to American thought and history. It is white heterosexual male dominated where anyone outside this belief system isn't important to the system unless they spend money on their party and in their business. That's it. No one really matters unless they believe in this heirarchy. The blacks, browns and other people of color or sex may enter and move up but it will always be white male ruled according to the rules they make.
It's hierarchical in nature, not democratic in nature.

From my point of view, "reality" =

- a wonderful mix of diverse cultures; enjoying the best that each has to offer. I love the classic native Americans' philosophy of being one with the land and caring for it. I grew up in a very ethnic neighborhood, where immigrants from Italy, Germany and Mexico cared for their extended families and shared that concept with others.

- a sense of "live and let live." America is the place that allows people to follow their own rainbows and march to their own drummers. What the hell should I care what others around me are doing, as long as they don't endanger me?

- as a result of those diverse cultures, a rich variety of cuisine, music and literature.

Yes, republicans want to improve things by lower taxes, fighting terroism and reaching across the political isle and allowing Ted Kennedy to write the education bill and the amnesty bill which turned out to be a disaster.

Democraps in return criticize every little thing and turn mole hills into mountains. They make up facts, figures and lie about the economy, employment and the war on terror. The criticize Bush for pardoning Libby while saying nothing when Clinton Pardoned 6 IRA terrorist, Marc Rich (who's wife gave a hefty contribution to DNC) and two dozen other people.

This is what the country of the Democraps is like.

I assume by your question that you have not been to America. I'd like to extend you an invitation anytime you can work it out. Because you certainly won't find the answer to your question on Yahoo Answers.
