An education is not job training.

Actually, that's where you're wrong. Universities are indeed education. A high majority of students take a variety of classes outside of their concentration for a bit of variety, and to learn more of what they're interested in.

Training for a job is done during work terms, internships, on the job, or at a hands-on college.

If you're asking why your tax dollars go to help fund public colleges and universities, here's your answer: because university is VERY expensive and if all students were forced to pay their own way, only the rich would be able to go. That's less than 10% of the population. Anyone else that wanted to go would be in debt. Therefore, the nation would be full of uneducated people, thus decreasing the number of people in the work force that we encounter everyday.

Public education is needed to sustain the economy.

In any education institution, what they teach you is just the basis and the exposure. The real education comes when you enter the working world, mix with people and you apply what you learn to your job. It is your education and so you should be responsible for it unless there are some kind souls out there who are willing to help you out.
