We will be staying DT for NY's also(Main Street Station). You do realize they close down the strip to all vehicle traffic on NY's Eve.

yes there is a bus, it is called the deuce and costs 5 dollars for all day travel. It departs downtown right at the end of freemount street and goes very regulary (about every 8 or 9 minutes). It can take quite a while to get to the hotels on the strip however due to the traffic and all the stops (there is a stop at every casino along the strip).
Taxis from downtown to the strip normally cost between 10-20 dollars, depending on what casion you want to go to on the strip.
I was just there lats week and I always used the buses but like I said it can take a while to get to the strip.

The best way to get to the Strip would be to take a cab. The buses are sometimes painfully slow, particularly when traffic is bad and traffic will be bad on New Years Eve. Going to cost you but you are on vacation and your time is also worth something. There are no free shuttles running from downtown directly to the Strip. Yeah...and you're going to want to get from downtown to the Strip real early or you'll likely be out of luck. You won't get anywhere near the middle of the action if you wait. Might also look at the Gold Coast which has a free shuttle, is cheap and, in a pinch, you could walk to the Strip.

Having traveled to Vegas many, many times, I still think the best way to go to the strip is take a taxi. It's more expensive than shuttle or bus but it doesn't stop everywhere, taking an inordinate amount of time, and a taxi will take you specifically where you want to go. If you stay downtown or on the strip and you plan on spending the duration of your time in those areas, no need to even rent a car.
Downtown, there are several casinos within walking distance; depending upon where you stay on the strip, there are also likely to be several casinos you can walk to. Besides, walking on the strip is entertainment in its own right....you will be amazed at the microcosym of humanity that you see and that passes you. Quite, quite interesting......LOL

Other people have actually answered your transportation question. I just wanted to tell you that downtown is a pit. You would be better off staying at one of the off-strip casinos that caters to locals. These include any Station Casino (Palace Station, Texas Station, Boulder Station, Santa Fe Station, Sunset Station, Red Rock Station...and I probably forgot a few - look on Station Casino's website), Coast Casinos (GoldCoast or SunCoast), Rampart, Cannery, or Sam's Town. You will get a much nicer atmosphere, and be able to step outside after dark with less trepidation. You can call any of the casino / hotels I listed to find out about what kind of transportation is available to the strip. Some, Like GoldCoast and Palace Station, are as close or closer to the strip than is downtown.

Main Street Station is our favorite place to stay/play/eat. Very nice rooms, very friendly, some of the best gaming to be found anywhere and on top of that, the comp the low roller better than any other casino. IMO, the buffet at MSS is easily the best value buffet in Las Vegas. Great food at a very reasonable price. This buffet has been selected by the Las Vegas Review Journal as the best in LV several times, over buffets costing 2-3 times as much. Restaurants - The Triple 7 restaurant & brew pub - Their $7 complete prime rib dinner is a great deal(after 4pm) and they offer $1 draws after midnight. The Pullman Grille - One of the finest restaurants in Las Vegas. Great food, great service, reasonable prices. If you like old world charm, you would love this place. The knock on MSS is that if you want to use the pool you have to use the rooftop pool at the California. It's really not a big deal since the hotels are connected. But, if a really nice pool is a required, you should probably think about the Golden Nugget. The Golden Nugget is a very nice 4 star hotel, with very nice rooms and you gotta love their pool(shark tank), but their gaming is very poor, and their restaurants and buffet are on the expensive side. They do have the only sportsbook worth spending any time in(downtown).. If you really want to go "on the cheap" the El Cortez is a bargain hunters dream. The "Pavillion" rooms are okay, and very convenient if you don't mind walking up one flight of stairs. Their "Tower" rooms are huge and very nice. The only thing we don't like about this one is they don't have in-room safes. After MSS my second choice for all around place to stay downtown would be the Four Queens.. Other than the restaurants and buffet at MSS, these are our other fav bargain eats downtown. 99c shrimp cocktail - Golden Gate Femont "Seafood Buffet" - $15.99 Sun/Tue/Fri "Graveyard Specials" - Market Street Cafe - California Roberta's Steakhouse - El Cortez, not exactly a "bargain" but IMO, this is probably the best value steakhouse in LV. ~Jack~

You can do either, a bus, the shuttle, a taxi it's to far to walk sorry, or you could rent a car, but holidays are busier times there and are not cheaper times.

The airport is REALLY REALLY close to the strip. You can take a bus, cab ($10), or heck, even walk (depending on where you stay) it's that close.
