It is because the government doesn't have a way to control it. To many people grow it on their own so they would not be able to tax it.

It's legal. There is a government grade marijuana you can get from a pharmacy(usually needs to be called in ahead of time so they can recieve the order). But you must be terminally ill to get a prescription for it.
Some reasons it's illegal without a prescription is because it is considered a mind altering drug. Any drug that is considered mind altering is definately prescription, just like Adderall or Ritalin. Yes I know that alcohol is legal and it is also mind altering. Hence why we had the prohibition way back when. But the government was losing control on that law and that is why alcohol was legalized again. There are several other reasons as well I'm sure.
The fact that it can't be taxed is the stoners way of being "rebellious". It's just not true. Believe me the government would be making out very well if it were legal. Just like anything else the IRS would be monitoring you if you were living well but weren't reporting alot of money.

It isn't legal because if it was the Alcohol and Drug industry would lose money as well the oil industry annd others as hemp is a cheap, easy to grow product that can be used for fuel, fabrics and a variety of other products.

The "war on drugs" is a cash cow for the government. Not only can the money be seized from dealers, so can property such as cars, homes, etc. That makes for a much larger profit than some measly tax would, huh?

It would be hard for the govt. to charge taxes off of it, but also because no matter what some idiot will tell you, It's bad for your health, and would have a negative effect on society. Just look at cigarettes, they're slowly being pulled out of the picture (ie. banned in most bars, and public areas) but they'll never go fully illegal because so long as the govt. is profetting from it, why do anything about it.

Because Congress hasn't made it legal.
Whether that's because of moral issues, inertia, lobbyists for the drug companies, or whatever -- the bottom line is that Congress has not changed the laws removing restrictions.

Windy's right..
And...some people still believe Marijuana is the gateway drug.
I smoked some joints in college, and I never tried any other drugs.

I agree with Windy; it would be hard for the government to tax it, as it's easily grown.
During Prohibition, the cops who were busting gin joints and still owners were Treasury, not criminal. And the way they busted Al Capone was for tax evasion.
