I quit smoking a year and a half ago and I stopped craving them after about three days. When I wanted one I chewed a lot of gum. This may sound funny but I also chewed on straws. That's what helped me.

On Jan. 2 1971, I asked Jesus to be my Lord and Saviour. I was
smoking very heavy and couldn't seem to quit. I asked God to take
the desire away from me and heal me of that addiction. There was
no withdrawal and from that time on I can't stand the smell of
cigarette smoke. If you want to, you can do it. It is hard as I tried on
my own for a long time and never succeeded. You can do it, just think
of what your lungs are going through. Believe me your lungs will be
black on Xray; mine were. The next year I went back the Radiologist
said, "You've quit smoking!" When I said how did you know he showed
me the difference of the 2 XRays. I had pink healthy lungs with the 2nd
XRay. The tobacco companies put more nicotine in the cigarettes than
it says on the box. I know because I talked to someone who knew
about it. He was a tobacco farmer who had been to the factory and
saw how the cigarettes were really made. The companies don't want
to lose you so they keep you addicted. Good luck. I know you can do it;
you just have to want it bad enough.

I can only quit a few weeks at a time!
My friend quit for 3 months and started up again.. You kindof have to hibernate and not be around ANY cigs what so ever.
Too hard for me.

i quit in june of 1986. i still get an occasional craving. but i know they'll make me get light headed and i'll have a coughing fit so i can get past it. plus i REFUSE to pay that much. when i first started smoking cigarettes were 25 cents a pack. when i quit i think they were 50 cents.
i just read some of your answers and i did what denise did. i chewed on straws.

You never really lose the cravings. There will be situations you are in that you think "I would love a smoke". But if you really want to quit it won't matter.

I quit 25 times a day -- there's nothing to it. Just don't ask me to quit for more than an hour.
