My '05 tC had a similar problem - found out it was a trim piece (wraps around the rear window) that had a fastener that broke and caused it to rattle, it is still under warranty so it was replaced by the dealer, now it is fine.

Common cause of this is the holder that holds down the spare tire has some how come loose. Simply pull up the cover to the spare tire and retighten.

That or something has slipped down under the spare tire cover and is rattling around in the back.

That would be the first thing I'd check.

sounds like something is loose back there, do some detective work, take all out of your trunk, even the spare, clear it all out, put it back..tightening up that spare, if not better check under the car for something loose..and the exterior trim..
good luck to you..nothing is worse then an annoying rattle
