7 is the # of completeness, 3 is also a # of completeness and the # of the Trinity. Thus 3 7's is the # of God. Man was created on the 6th day, and 6 is the # of man. The 3 6's are the un-holy trinity, man setting himself as God.

"In the Bible, the Book of Revelation (13:17-18) cryptically asserts 666 to be "the number of a man", associated with the beast, an antagonistic creature that appears briefly about two-thirds into the apocalyptic vision. The author challenges the reader to figure out the symbolism of this number, a challenge that has inspired mystics and would-be prophets ever since. The number of people who have been proposed to be the man whose number is 666 is vast and ever growing; it usually does not demand much ingenuity to find several ways to connect one's political or religious opponent with the number 666, since there is no biblical restriction on how a connection between a man and the number may be established.
In modern popular culture, 666 has become one of the most widely recognized symbols for Satan or the Devil. Earnest references to 666 occur both among apocalypticist Christian groups and in explicitly anti-Christian subcultures such as that surrounding some heavy metal bands; more humorous allusions to the 666 symbolism (e.g., the Lemmings level featuring three 6's built upon "hellish" lava terrain) are mainstream. An appearance of the number 666 in contemporary Western art or literature is more likely than not a conscious reference to this number of the Beast symbolism. Such popular references to 666 are too numerous to list here.
It is not uncommon to see the symbolic role of the integer 666 transferred to the digit sequence 6-6-6. Some people take the satanic associations of 666 so seriously that they actively avoid things related to 666 or the digits 6-6-6. This is known (more or less tongue-in-cheek) as hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia."
"777 = 3 × 7 × 37, sphenic number, Harshad number, 3333 in senary (base 6) counting. Sometimes given the title of "Jesus' number," as the numbers 3 and 7 were both "perfect numbers" under Hebrew tradition. In the Pixies song "Monkey Gone To Heaven" it is said that "If man is 555 and the devil is 666, so God must be 777." 777 is also found in the title of the book 777 and Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley"

The number 777 appears in the bible in 1 place:
Gen 5:31
So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died. (Lamech was Noah's father)
However, in Revelation there are several "series" of sevens (seven angels, seven trumpets, seven seals, etc. etc.). I do not believe that there is any significance to 3 sevens here - there are sevens all over the place. I have no doubt that someone sees groups of three sevens, though.
The number 666 appears in 4 places:
1Ki 10:14
Now the weight of gold which came in to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold,
2Ch 9:13
Now the weight of gold which came to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold,
Ezr 2:13
the sons of Adonikam, 666;
Rev 13:18
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.
Most Christian sects equate "the beast" in this verse with *the* "Antichrist" who will be responsible for great misery on the earth before the Millenium. According to this doctrine, somehow the number 666 will be a warning that the knowledgeable can use to identify him. Other sects, of course, give this verse an entirely different interpretation. Here's one of my favorites (if you want a good laugh) http://www.cephasministry.com/prophecy_royals_and_the_antichrist.html .
My advice: consider carefully the "proof" used by people when they tell you the significance of these numbers. Consider if the proof provided is a series of carefully chosen coincidences which hide a real lack of significance. If you believe the bible, as I do, consider what the bible actually says about this number. Don't let anyone lead you into believing something completely false just because they are persuasive. Check the facts.

The above two answers pose to me an interesting question....
If 666 is the symbol of man, then how did it become to be known as the Symbol of the Devil, seeing as in religious mythology the Devil was in actuality not of man, but a Fallen Angel
