There are essentially only 3 sources for grants.

Federal grants are called Small Business Innovation Research grants. These are given primarily for some new innovation. You can find out what's available at http://www.sbirworld.com. There is also info on this site about how to apply.

Some cities offer grants to small businesses if they will locate in the downtown area, for the purposes of building up downtown traffic. Check with City Hall.

Finally, private foundations offer grants. You can get a list of most US Foundations and private grant sources at http://www.foundations.org/grantmakers.html.

You actually don't need that much money, Maybe get a credit card at Lowes or Home Depot and buy the basic materials and supplies. Get your business license and start advertising. And when you get your first job, buy the extras that you need for that job and you can build up from there. I have my own part time Painting biz and I barely spent any money. The best thing to do is buy what you need as you go, and try to add it into the quote. But remember you might have to under Bid to get those first jobs. Good Luck

I subscribed to several grant books over the years to help a non-profit organization I designed web pages for and found that grants are hard to come by unless you are in environmental protection, furthering education of children or children with disabilities.

I would go to the local Small Business and Development Office. They have programs to assist small businesses with start-up costs and free seminars and programs to help you in staying in business.

No, grants are usually for non profits or people who are studying something. You can contact your local small business association or sba and see about getting a small business loan. Good luck! Take care of your tools. You will need them for many years.

Look for second hand - hand tools, ask people to donate any they dont use, look for them at car boot sales, advertise in your free ads for any unwanted tools. Ask for early birthday/christmas presents or gift tokens for new electrical items, for safety reasons

That way you will appreciate starting at the bottom, other people will see it as a good way of building your business without incurring large costs before you have contracts.

I believe that when starting a business some plans should be made on how to obtain start up equipment before you open your doors to the public.
If you have no immediate cash, then items should be purchased after you have saved some money.

Roger, have you never heard of hand tools? If you are UK, look up local directory for your business enterprise agency. They can advise you on what grants are available. There's usually something available for new companies starting out, if only on help with costs of advertising, i.e. printing stationery etc.

No. Sort it out yourself. People these days just expect others to pick up the bill (ie taxpayers). I sorted my life out without relying on charity - do the same. Scrounger.
