There's a lot of debris that comes off the orbiting space capsules; torn insulation, ice, and other assorted garbage. The Apollo craft discarded huge amounts of debris - including the third stage booster that followed the manned craft to the moon. Likely what they saw were bits and pieces of their own craft.

most likely UFO sightings in space are ice-particles which crack off the spacecraft.
Such ice builds up on its way through the atmosphere as a result of water vapor in the atmosphere freezing on cold surfaces.
This is why the shuttles main tank for example has a foam coating, cause while burning fuel this surface would become EXTREMLY cold. And if you watch older rockets launch you see it fall off in hughe quantities.
Smaller ammounts of such ice builds up almost everywhere on the vehicles way up into orbit.
Now if you sit inside and look out you see all these particles fly around here and there, and sunlight reflects on it. And sometimes by using the attitude control thrusters those particles start rapidly moving from the (invisible) blast, causing the illusion that it's possibly some other craft flying in greater distance.
Since you have nothing out there to compare size and distance, yourself being in neverseenbefore light conditions, together with zero gravity .. well... even a drip of water on a window has been presented as an alien spacecraft... sooo
the boogie was most likely some sort of stuff getting loose from the spacecraft itself

Space debris -- and let's let this little foolishness go, once and for all. (sigh) Still doing homework.
"1. There are no 'astronaut UFO sightings.' All reported cases have been readily identified as entirely prosaic events.
2. Previous research efforts heve been conducted with individuals clearly lacking the proper credentials, experience and insight to penetrate the 'mystery.'
3. A number of specific individuals in this country and overseas have been the main source of the persistent published reports of 'astronaut UFO sightings', in absolute variance with the facts known to themselves but witheld from the general public. Evidence has been altered, omitted, or fabricated to support myth."

It has been speculated for years that it was a UFO sighting, though officially it was chronicled as some type of debris.
