According to Einstein, I thought you could only travel forward in time, not backward.


Another question: How fast would one have to travel to time travel?

Time travel the way most people think of it is not possible.

We all travel in time--forward. One second per second. If you speed yourself to relativistic speeds (not small compared to c=300 million m/s), you can slow down your time relative to folks at rest. So you can go a distant planet in a short period of time, come back, and find that a very long time had passed. Unfortunately, you'll be stuck in the future with no way to get back.

Nothing is considered possible ... until the first person does it. So go for it, Columbus!

Forwards in time? Wouldn't Cryogenics get the same result (Suspended animation - frozen) as long as you could be revived at the proper time in the future you wanted.

Backwards in time? If it is another dimension (Width, Bredth, Depth, Time) then just as the other dimensions can be shortened or lengthened, time should be too.

How Fast? Science Fiction uses our ignorance of speed, radiation, triangles near Bermuda, etc to explain how they make time travel. The final solution may be very different.
But ... if speed is the answer ...

Star Trek says if light bends around space and you take a short cut, you can get to the same point faster than the speed of light. That is their "Warp Speed".

You are currently traveling forward though time. Time appears to slow down as the speed of an object approaches the speed of light in a vacuum. It has been theorized that if an object could travel faster than the speed of light, it would move backward though time. The General Theory of Relativity does NOT state that an object can't exceed the speed of light. It only states that it can't REACH the speed of light. If an object could be created traveling faster than the speed of light, it could never slow down to the speed of light. The term Tachyons refers to any such objects if they exist.

Simple logic says that if time travel is possible, we should be able to travel back in time, because the past has already happened, but not forward, because the future hasn't happened yet. Of course, we couldn't alter the past, but we could observe (visual and auditory) and perhaps record (video and audio) and then bring the recordings back to the present. Wouldn't it be great to be able to go back in time and see and hear what REALLY happened then?

Unfortunately, simple logic in this case is apparently not valid, in light of the findings of Einstein and other competent scientists.

I constantly travel into the future. I do at a rate of one second per second. :-)
