It was Hart Mountain, but like many such names it was misunderstood, and people started insisting on Heart Mountain. The peak is almost exactly 10 miles NNW of downtown Cody, and about 12.5 miles WSW from a small town named Ralston (which is 5 miles West of Powell). Hart Mountain was once nicknamed "the upside-down mountain" as its peal is of older rock than its base. Locals insist that the mountain was blown in toto from an adjacent basin named Pat O'Hara Basin, flipping over and landing in the position it now holds. Geologists rejected this theory for a long time and attempted to explain the mountain in terms of erosion. Only last year new evidence surfaced to support the locals' theory.

Sadly, the slopes of Hart Mountain were used for the infamous Hart Mountain Relocation Center, a concentration camp for Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II.
