"The internet has replaced live debate as the most important forum for argument in the world today."

Disagree.

People offering their opinions to each other while admitting to be powerless sounds like a step in the wrong direction. Further, knowing that probably the only reason you're being allowed to do it is so the NSA can track dissent only makes it worse.

If the discussion then led to action, I'd believe that argument online has any usefulness.

That said, without many more options, people will continue to debate.

I will love it the day people actually get up and DO SOMETHING.

The internet is a powerful weapon and an amazing tool.
When I was inthe forces and deployed abroad it was either a letter or a long distance phone call to my parents. Now when our son is deployed he can sit down in front of a PC and see, hear and speak to us from thousands of miles away.

It has allowed people to take part in and be heard on forums who, before, would never have the opportunity.

No other "invention" allows people from around the world to sit and discuss the same question at the same time.

There is nothing wrong with having live debate to chisel out concerns between 2 or more citizens/politicians when it comes to governmental operation. The Internet is just ONE of many other media outlets which could be addressed. The important thing is to address concerns and get everyone to put their cards on the table. Only good can come of it.

I don't think that is true... there is and always will be lots of live debate.. happens all the time.
What the Internet does tho.. is let everyone have a chance to speak.. to express themselves. Some not so wisely but it is free speech... the Internet gives a choice to the millions of people who do not feel represented by their elected officials... and it allows people to vent rather than marching or storming the government offices. it is a good tool, used wisely.

Not much. The internet provides a chance to post a thought or question and others can respond with answers or hit and run insults. Not really a forum for true debate though.

I hope not. Most of what passes for debate on the Internet is unstylistic shouting and hateful. The lead blogs are all awful and totally partisan. Debate is a discussion of the issues in the hopes of swaying the other side. The Internet is about slash and burn politics.

Anonymous contributions can allow freedom of expression to the timid but also a smokescreen for the abusive.

Unfortunate, but probably true. However, we do not see real debates anymore. They are photo-ops with preselected questions, hand picked audiences and Hollywood like production.

It can not replace debate as long as there are moderators
