Because the media shoves it down our throats. Television, radio, magazines, newspapers, and the internet tell us all about the celebrities in Hollywood on a daily basis. Because of this, these celebrities gain popularity. For some reason, in our society, what is familiar is what is enjoyed. There's a lot of people out there who just simply cannot think for themselves enough to TRY NEW THINGS outside of the mainstream media. Something that a lot of people fail to realize is that just because something is "popular" doesn't mean that it's "good". Personally, I couldn't care less about a bunch of jerks who get paid big bucks to pretend to be someone they aren't. The media doesn't promote real people hardly ever anymore. It's all about an image, and it sickens me that so many people are sheep who think this mass produced garbage is actually good. Meanwhile, the rest of us would appreciate it if the media powers that be would STFU about Hollywood and maybe try and promote things that are more worthwhile. I'm tired of going grocery shopping and without even picking up a magazine, know about every celeb's eating disorder, dating status, and other mindless drama just by glancing up at the register. GET OUT OF MY BRAIN, HOLLYWOOD! YOU ARE NOT WANTED HERE!!!!

Americans love the dream of big money for little work - which is the essence of Hollywood. And if the everyday American can't get rich by doing virtually nothing, then they might as well live vicariously through the lives of Hollywood "stars".

I could care less about hollyweird.. They have enough of a swelled head to begin with, I would put more stock in the word of the average Joe or Jane than a Hollywood elitist.

As with all generalizations you are wrong. Not all Americans are preoccupied with Hollywood. I dont care what they do or say. They provide a service and its called entertainment and thats all I watch. I dont care who dates or divorces or who had a baby.

I suspect there are many reasons, but the one theory which really seems most likely is because:
1. the media has fed us crap for so long that we think it all tastes great, and;
2. we've become numb to real news and lost the capacity to think, feel and interact with other humans.

In a nutshell, we would rather sit in our homes or offices and be mindlessly entertained without commitment.

I think that as entertainers become more and more part-time politicians, that the trend is heading in other directions.
Personally, I miss the real entertainers of the past.

Not all of us are. There's a certain number of us who prefer the descriptive term "HollyWeird" to the name of the geographic location!
