In olden times Before reading and writing became available to the proletariat... all information and stories were passed down in story form.

There is probably speculation that stories were exaggerated. However, I doubt this to be true, as the people relied heavily on the information passed down the ages... Vikings travelled extensively before reading & writing were common, they did this on information that was passsed down the generations.

There must be substance in some of the "old wives tales" also wisdom usuallly comes with age- many old wives tales relate to medication of sickness and lots of these are still used by herbal pharmicists today.

Yes I do believe in old wives tales! Do you?

Yes, although I hate to admit it, I find myself believing things I have been told, such as
If you drop a knife - it means you will be having a visitor.
If two knifes are crossed it means an argument.
If a picture falls off the wall, you will hear of someone being ill.
If a dog is howling during daytime it means you will hear of a death (don't like that one)!!
I will have to stop now, I am frightening the life out myself!!!

I don't have a favourite, I can only think of a couple off top of my head......
Don't put new shoes on the table.
Don't look at the full moon through glass.
I don't know where these came from but they, and loads of others, are still used in my family!

It's silly, but I still do believe in some of them. It's kind of fun.

The ones I like are:
-Stepping on Daddy Long Legs with cause rain.
-If your nose itches, someone is thinking about you.
-If your ears are ringing, someone is talking about you.
-If you open a pocket knife, you be the one to close it or bad luck will follow.

Magpies.....one for sorrow
two for joy
three for a girl
four for a boy
five for silver
six for gold
seven for a secret never to be told

Whenever I see a single magpie I say "Good morning Mr Magpie how is your wife" three times. So do all my sisters. My friend spits on her hand and rubs them together!

I heard one the other day that I have never heard before but I quit doing this since I heard it.

Someone told me not to put my purse on the floor because it meant that you would run out of money.
