If by poor, you are referring to materialism and money, poverty is caused by several things to wit: lack of education, lack of work ethic, criminal history, laziness, wanting to start at the highest salary instead of earning your way up , to name a few. What has kept me out of poverty is working hard, doing more than is asked of me without complaint, taking opportunity to learn things outside my job description, taking initiative instead of waiting for orders, providing excellent customer service for both internal and external customers, keeping the goals and objectives of the company in mind and doing what I can to attain them to name a few.
But, one can be limited by many other things such as age and natural ability and opportunities. However, one can be rich in family and other relationships, love, self-respect, health, etc.
I have always worked in social services or health services for the poor. It is very rewarding work, though not necessarily monetarily.

Living within a budget
Only buying what I need, not everything I want
All you need is food & water& shelter.
Have a job that pays you enough to pay your bills.
And don't live in a way that you can't afford the bills.
Know what your income is and what your expenses are and take care of the balancing of your accounts every week.
Don't let the bills go unpaid, they will just be more next month and you will have late fees on top of it.
Pay bills on time
Don't use a credit card, if you can't afford to pay cash, you don't need it.
Keeping your head above water as they say is really hard and getting harder.
Our expenses have doubled in the past 20 years and there has been no change in our way of living.
It is so unbelievable.
It is so hard for young people just out of school nowdays to even afford to pay rent or a car payment, I really don't know how some of them are going to even get by.

My parents in many ways because they taught me the value of an education. They paid for me to go to college. I'm working on a Masters now. I am also willing and able to face my fears. I can step out of my comfort zone and do so on a fairly regular basis. I know that whatever I think I know is so small and almost nothing is black and white. I work very hard. I am lucky enough to have a decent job.

I budget down to the last cent and we are going okay a bit tight some weeks but other weeks a little to go out. But this is including a little put aside for the rainy days. Roof over our heads, food in the fridge, bills paid, every thing okay.

Education!!! Get a job, any job. If people have no skills, they need to take what they can get to get the experience. I think so many people feel certain jobs are beneath them. Well, if you can't pay the bills or take care of yourself, nothing is beneath you. Everyone has to start somewhere. If they can save 10% of their paycheck then they are helping secure their future.

hard work, discipline, tolerance and education. If you work hard you will always have a job. If you have discipline you will keep and job and educate yourself to make more money, if your tolerant you want quit a job prematurely because of co-workers and education helps you make more money. You don't necessarily need college education. But you do need at least a trade or good knowledge of a job to advance in life.
