Usually starting out I'd say every other day til your period. If you really want to pinpoint when you ovulate(not the day 14 myth BS still being taught) then you need to get the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and learn how to chart your cycle. No one can tell you when you ovulate without doing this. It's a guess that more often than not is wrong....if it weren't then the rythm method would actually work! AS for my own experience, I don't ovulate til really late in my cycles...just 7 days before my period is normally due so if someone told me to follow the "everyone ovulates on the 14th day of their cycle" BS I would never get pregnant and I would think I was teh most infertile person on the planet....but here I am pregnant with #5! Try the book It's really helpful also I reccomend going to http://www.fertilityfriend.com and starting a free account. They have tutorials over the how-to's of charting and an online chart you plug your info in and it graphs it for you(much easier in the beginning than trying to graph it yourself and pinpoint ovulation).

Have sex everyother day starting when your period ends until your next period is due. If you really want to pinpoint it though, use ovulation tests. These tests tell you about 24 hours before you ovulate. Women ovulate beween 12-16 days before their next period is due. The time between when you ovulate and when your next period is due is called your luteal phase. I have an average 28 day cycle, but through tracking I found out that I have a 12 day luteal phase, so I ovulate on day 16. I have sex everyother day after my cycle ends then everyday starting on day 14, through day 17.

You can only conceive after ovulation has occured. For a normal woman with a 28 day cycle, ovulation usually occurs mid cycle / or around day 14.
The best, most accurate way to determine ovulation would be taking your temperature first thing in the morning with a basal body thermometer and "getting to know your cervix". (ooo yuck , I know..but it works).
Having sex the day before ovulation, the day of ovulation and the day after are your best bets of conceiving.
A newly released egg, ready to be fertilized only lives 24 hours. And as time increases after ovulation the egg will begin to break down...if a sperm "finds your egg" in your tube as your egg begins it's journey down your fallopian tube - pregnancy is very possible.
Good luck sweetie.
