It isn't reccomended that you take your turtle out of the tank to play with them. If they are over 4" and don't run to hide right way it is OK and means they are not stressed out. If they are not exploring and are hiding that means they are stressed out and would rather be put back in their tank.

Some people get a large fluffy shoe for cats or something from the pet store and let them hide in it but there are some things you can do for them to play by themself in the tank.

Bubble stones/wands hook up to an air pump via a clear tubing which can be purchased at the petstore..often turtles will like to play in and eat the bubbles. Also if you have a water fall filter some like to hide under it. If you have a small turtle try a coffee mug in the tank.

As for playing with you-well, not so much. They are more of a look, don't touch pet.

http://www.redearslider.com is a great website/forum where you can read the content but if you sign up (for free) you can ask questions too.

This is a bubble/air stone which when hooked up to an air pump forms bubbles in the tank. http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441811416&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302030092&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023693&bmUID=1184015480604&itemNo=8&Ntt=air+stone&In=All&previousText=air+stone&N=2

Good luck.

They don't like being handled. They are easily frightened and run when they can. Turtles are not a good pet if you want something that you can hold all the time. It really is stressful on them. If you want them to play then take them outside and let them go turn around count to 60 and then try and find the little guy. No they don't play. They don't like being held or bothered by humans. Leave the turtle be.

I hope if you still have the little guy that you have him/her in some kind of water..as they are aquatic. I have a RES and she is the shyest out of the 4 I have. I tend to not take her out as much. The odd time I will put a fish in the tank and I consider that their play time. They will chase the fish and this is a good source of exercise....

Red-ear Sliders like to play, but not with people. Just like you would distrust a 20-foot tall alien, so turtles distrust us.

What they like is a lot of warm, clean water to swim around in, and tasty food to hunt.

I am glad you are planning to release it- I hope this is going to be soon? It really stresses a turtle to be held captive like that.
