I am searching for ways to connect my laptop to the internet and my current network is through an ethernet router. When I try to connect my laptop to it the ethernet cable is slightly too large. The laptop comes with packed in wireless which is of no use to me and an as of yet unidentified port. I would like help in identifing it. The symbol next to the port is a line with 3 boxes below it and 2 above it. I am starting to feel like an idiot now and I may have even been wrong about the size.

I am guessing that you are trying to fit the Ethernet connector into the modem/phone port.

Ethernet will look similar to the modem port, but instead of having two contacts on the bottom, it will have 8. If the Ethernet cable fits, it is the right one.

If you do not have Ethernet, then you can either get an Ethernet PC card or an Ethernet USB adapter.

If you mean that the cable is too large for the port, you're trying to connect an Ethernet cable to a phone line port in your computer. Obviously, your computer doesn't have an Ethernet port. You should get an Ethernet to USB adapter.

It sounds like the Ethernet symbol. IF there are 8 pins in the port than it is ethernet. 4 pins is "high speed" 2 pins is a modem.

check that the cable you are using is a cat5 or cat5e. If it is cat6 the connector is slightly larger than cat5. but should still fit. It will feel tight.

You can also add a wifi router to your cable modem or DSL modem and a PCMCIA wifi card to your laptop and then connect wireless to the laptop.
