Actually, there is already an Amendment to that effect: the Equal Protection Amendment (14th). All Americans are supposed to be treated equally under the law. Sadly, nobody in Washington (both parties) pay any attention to the Constitution. The vast majority of everything our federal government does is unconstitutional. But they've been doing it for almost 100 years so nobody cares anymore.

They almost have to -- it's the nature of any rules systems. Some limitations are imposed for the common good.

Not allowing people to play loud music at all hours of the night is a restriction, which by legal definition is a "harm". But govts can pass noise abatement ordinances for residential neighborhoods.

"Taxes are the price we pay to live in a civilized society". We pay for community services -- defense, courts, police, roads, schools, etc. But at what point are taxes excessive and the burdens they impose unreasonably compared to the benefits gained by those who pay (as opposed to the benefits gained by others who are not paying).

Some balance must exist. That's the nature of any govt system. The question is always where the line gets drawn.

It should be minimal.

You are always going to have some form of taxation, but it should be minimal and distributed equally aka a flat tax.

Social welfare programs should be few and only help the truly needy.

The people should be allowed to approve those laws based on informed decisions. It's OK as long as majority benefits.

ALL laws limit the rights of some to benefit others.

The trick is to legislate wisely!
