My motherboard is a Asus m2n-sli deluxe. It said in the manual that I must plug the heatsink/fan into the CPU fan recepticle for system monitoring. The manual said that a 3 pin fan is backward compatible. Does that mean that I plug it in to the recepticle, allowing one pin on the mobo to stick out beside the heatsink/fan plug and wires? So, should I go ahead and plug it into the the CPU fan recepticle in the only way that it can?

Yes that is what you do. The fourth pin on the motherboard is for speed control. Since the fan is only 3 pin, you will not be able to control the speed, but it will still work.

Yes you can. The extra PIN is for the BIOS to monitor the fan speed which is nice, but not crucial. The fan will run anyway. Just don't overclock this board/CPU/RAM unless you plan on installing a water-cooled system instead of the heatsink/fan combo.

The fourth pin is for velocity administration. The fan will run positive yet continually at optimal rpm. A 4 pin fan could have enabled fan to run at diverse velocity in accordance to the device/CPU temperature.
