He stubbed his little toe really hard yesterday morning - it sounded like a gunshot when it happened. He wouldn't stay off of it, and today it is black and blue and very painful. He says he feels like the bone on the side of his foot may be sprained or broken, but like a man, he won't go to the doctor! He wants to stay off of it (now) and perhaps tape it up. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

It's not a money thing - we've got excellent insurance! Unless things really get worse, he's just not going to go. He's one of those hoo-ah Army guys who are tougher than nails and all that. He's convinced that taping it up will fix him right up, so I'm going to go by the drug store on my way home and get some gauze and tape.

Some of these answers do crack me up!

That's pretty much all the doctor would do.

He should go to the doctor or his foot will get worst and it might cause problems for him in the future.
It may not be broken, its probably sprained or the bone is badly hit.
Either way he should get it checked at a doctor. The doctor can get a better look with x-rays. You cant tell whats really wrong only from the outside. My boyfriend had a broken arm and wouldn't go the doctor, after a week he finally did and because he waited so long he has a problem with twisting his wrist and lifting things.
So your hubby should swallow his manly pride or else he may be walking with a limp or have problems and pain in his foot for the rest of his life.

I just got my cast off of my foot I broke my heel badly and wouldn't go to the doc for 3 days. Give him a day or two he will get tired of the pain like I did. He should take it very seriously though a broken bone can puncture a vein and cause internal bleeding. Alternate with ice not heat 15 minutes on 15 minutes off that will help the swelling and allow circulation to return so healing will speed up.

he can tape the little toe to the one next to it, but caution him not to tape it tightly, or he could cut off the circulation and the toe will literally rot causing gangrene. If however the bone on the side of his foot, one of the meta tarsals, is broken, he should seek medical treatment, it could get a whole lot worse and lead to complications as severe as amputation.
It will help to elevate the foot. Apply ice, but for no more than 20 minutes at a time, or again you impair circulation.

If it's not just the toe, it could be the metatarsal, or the joint between - and if there is a break, that could cause more problems in the long run. I know from experience. If it gets bad enough, hopefully he'll go. I still have issues going on with my foot after last summer's experience.

Sounds like it's broken, based on that description. If there's no other damage, or displacement, taping it and staying off it will do just fine, but the only way to tell if that's what's really wrong (and nothing else) is to see a doc.

Even if it was broken, all they would do it tape it to the other toes after they had reduced the fracture. If it feels displaced, he can pull on it and it should reduce, assuming it needs it at all. I can see both sides of it, you wanting him to get help, him not wanting to spend money over something so trivial. The choice is yours, but like I said there is not much they do IF it is even broken.

Well, turn on your x-ray machine and get 3 d pics of the ankle and leg all around. Then attempt to set the leg wherever it is broken. Once set you can place a cast around it for approx 60-90 days.

If you don't have these things . . he needs a doctor.

Get that man to the hospital. His foot is broken and the bone might not set right or he could get an infection and it could affect his walking and......get to the doctors NOW

Of course he needs to go to the doctor or the emergency room.

If he continues to refuse, then he needs to sit down (and STAY down) elevate his foot, put ice on it (20 minutes on....30 off....continue) and take either Ibuprofen or Aleve for pain.

Make sure he doesn't put the ice directly on his foot. He needs to wrap the ice bag in a towel.
