You need an ethernet cross cable. The initial answer does not properly identify the cross cable. Go to a dealer and purchase a cross cable.

You need to assign static IP addresses to both pc LAN port; I suggest on pc # 1 use 192.168.1.10, subnet 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.10 do not worry about DNS; on pc # 2 assign IP as 192.168.1.20 with subnet, and default gateway same as pc # 1. All should then work

You need a special cable, but it is possible. If you hold up both ends of a ethernet cable together, and look at the colors of the wires in the plug, they are in the same order. The cable you need has the order backwards on the other end. This I believe is called a crossover cable. Then you should be good to go.

If you want a DIRECT cable connection, you need a crossover cable, which is slightly different in the wiring aspect from a standard ethernet cable. You can purchase crossover cables at a local Best Buy (for a ridiculous price) or online. Or you can wire one yourself by Googling how.

If you don't want to deal with all that, you would need to have a router or hub in place to link the machines together with standard ethernet cables.
