There are lots of differences between African and Asian elephants. The size and shape of the ears, the tips of the trunks, the shape of the skulls, the posture, the tusks, etc. For a one shot stop that lists most if not all of the differences, go here:
http://www.upali.ch/differences_en.html
Scroll down a bit on the page and you'll see a comprehensive chart and illustrations too.
The most immediately obvious difference is probably found with the ears. The African species have large ears that nearly cover the shoulders when folded back while the Asian species has much smaller ears that don't extend much past the head.

African elephants are much larger is size and body weight as well as the shape of their ears. Their ears are much larger and more triangular. Asian elephants are much smaller to allow easier movement through dense jungle undergrowth. Their ears are also smaller and more square in shape. Ears and body size are the easiest ways to distinguish between the two species.

African elephants - larger, proportionately larger ears, both sexes have tusks.
Indian elephants - smaller, proportionately smaller ears, typically only the males have tusks, the top of their heads are not rounded, but have four bumps, kind of like a Ferengi.

African elephants are greater than Indian elephants and have plenty greater ears. Africans-the two sexes improve tusks on the exterior of their bodies--Indians-- in trouble-free terms the adult males improve tusks on the exterior.

The Indian elephant is more calm and can be teached by people to work. The african elephant is wild and it does not learn to obey orders.
