Here is what they found. If subliminal messages are displayed in such a way that they cannot be seen consciously, they cannot be seen at all. They have no effect on the mind.
To get the message to register at any level, it can be see consciously and therefore is no longer subliminal.
The same is true of backwards messages hidden on records (CDs these days). No one could ever prove that backwards masking could be detected by the brain and influence behaviour. Judas Priest won a law suit because the plaintiff could not prove that backwards masking existed or that it could influence the mind.

Subliminal messages have proved to work in a lab setting. However, in the real world, subliminal messages do not work. It worked in a lab because you can control everything from the temperature, amount of exposure, and other variables. In the real world, it is impossible to control anything. So yes, they have been proven to work in labs, but no, they do not work in the real world.
