It's so sad, you know with his dad dying and everything! I don't know of any other sad cartoons!

Disney never killed anyone (animal) off in any cartoons after Bambi because it was so upsetting until Lion King

An old one - When the Wind Blows: This dark-humour and fairly disturbing movie tells the tale of Jim and Hilda Bloggs, a middle-class couple whose children have all grown up. Their home is hit indirectly by a Soviet nuclear bomb, leaving it in ashes and barely standing. Jim and Hilda survive by ducking behind a door that Jim set up as an inner refuge. The film follows the pair as they cope with the devastation and humiliation of barely surviving the attack, and as they steadily fall into radiation sickness which will eventually kill them both.
Saw this back in the 80's - had me in a funk for a week.

I know it has already been said, but I'm going to have to say Grave of Fire Flies. Not only is it the saddest animated feature I've ever seen, it is probably the saddest movie I have seen period. I don't know how you could not get upset after watching it.
It's about a brother and sister trying to manage in Japan during WWII.
Just thinking about it now makes me sick.

I love the lion king. I would say Watership Down or this movie about a toy rabbit. They were going to burn because a little boy with a disease played with it. Then the rabbit came to life and ran away to be with a girl bunny. And the sick boy was very sad.

Land Before Time - Little Foots mother's death was brutal. Also All dogs go to Heaven. Lot of the Don Bluth films I suppose - great animator

An American Tale was also a sad cartoon. It entails a little mouse who is separated from his family. He spends his time pining over the loss and they are so close he just doesnt realize it. It is the only move ever to bring a tear to this heartless guys eyes.

Dumbo is so much sadder than the Lion King, when his mum is rocking him to sleep through those bars in her trunk, gets me even now!
