First, get over the idea that it's "gross"...it is your body and it is quite natural. Pelvic exams aren't the most pleasant medical procedure, but they are necessary and normal...we all have to do it honey!
Any doctor, male or female has seen it all before...but if you are more comfortable with a woman, there are plenty of female OB/GYNs and general practitioners. I have my pelvic exams done at my regular doctor's office!
It isn't painful...uncomfortable is a much better word. They insert a metal tool called a "scapula" inside you and open it up to give them access to your cervix...this feels like a little pressure. The doctor takes a long swab and collects some fluid (containing cells) from your cervix. You might feel a little twinge when this happens since it's a sensitive spot. The whole thing takes only a couple of minutes...close your eyes and sing your favorite song to yourself and it is over before you know it.
If you can't get personal with your mom, please work on this...your mom probably cares more about you than anyone else in the world...and if you think about it, you've already shared the most intimate possible experience with her (when she gave birth to you). Your mom will give you MUCH better advice than anyone on this system and that ANY of your friends...after all, she's a woman and she understands!
You're going to need her help to see the doctor! If you've already started your period, then you should probably get an exam soon just to make sure everything is normal "down there". If you haven't, you can combine your questions with other issues you'll need to discuss with your mom when it happens!

You should use which ever gender of doctor you feel comfortable with. At your age, a female physician is probably best. Pelvic exams are not terribly comfortable but it doesn't take long and the discomfort stops as soon as the exam's over. If there's pain, then you need to let your doctor know immediately. This is an important thing to do as a woman and you need to be totally honest with your gynecologist (they won't tell your Mom).

You can certainly request a female doctor to do your exam. It doesn't really hurt but you may be uncomfortable. If they do a pap smear, they use a speculum to stretch you out a little. This might feel weird and cold going in. Then they take a long qtip and scrape some cells off your cervix. This can be uncomfortable, and may give slight cramps. Then they gently look and touch to look for any bumps or other irregularities. The cell sample is sent to a lab to detect any abnormalities, which could mean cervical cancer or other things.

Yes you can def have a girl doctor do the exam!! I always do, I feel more comfortable with a girl doctor! It doesnt hurt - first they put the speculum in - which kind of props you open and it doesnt hurt, its just cold, and then they do a few swabs with big q-tips, and then they take a little tissue sample and it doesnt hurt at all - if it does, it feels like a tiny pinch...also, they might look at your cervix. It actually is pretty quick and is not painful. They also might do a breast exam on you. Don't be scared =) and good luck.

First of all, what's gross about YOUR body???
Secondly, why wouldn't you have a female doctor? Don't you think a female doctor knows best what the exam feels like?
If you don't share personal stuff with your mom, what do your share with her, just talkin about the weather?
GO TO A FEMALE DOCTOR. Then ask her all your questions.
If your mom's doctor is female, she'd be a fine choice. She could help you get over your fear of talking honestly with your mom. Of course, you could pay examination fees to your doctor for every little thing, or you could see your mom first.

Yes you can have a girl doctor. I won't see a man, just because they don't have our parts and they don't know what it feels like to be us. Women seem to listen better to other women. It does not hurt, but it is uncomfortable. The doctor will insert a metal looking thing (the technical term has escaped me) and then she will take a long cotton swap and swap inside. The doctor will also feel your breasts for any bumps.
Don't be afraid to talk to your mom about this. She is probably just as scared of "the talk" as you are.

yeah I always have a female doctor do mine. As a girl you have every right to request it, there always has to be female staff on duty for that reason. It's embarassing for you now but believe me, in a few years, you'll probably bring it up as a joke while you're having tea and biscuits! :D
It can be painful if you don't relax, so, horrid as it is, Relax! Just do as they say and pretend you're not there. They basically ask you to put your knees up and let them drop to the side...the most undignified you'll ever be besides having a child. But, you'll have to have it happen many times so get used to it! :)
Welcome to the world honey! You'll be fine;)
Oh, and at 14 you it's true you wouldn't normally have an exam...unless there's a reason for you to give one or if you are sexually active. They say you shouldn't have one til 25, but that's only cos they're being cheap. If you have or are one of the above then you have every right to push it and have your exam. Better to be safe than sorry.
