Fear!
We don't actually need control or to be controlled, it is our own fear that causes us to believe that we need to be in control. It is our own insecurity that causes us to allow ourselves to be controlled and that leads to a lack of respect for each others individuality. If each person took responsibility for their own actions, did the things they needed to do each day to take "care of themselves" then none of us would have to give thought to what each other were doing. No one would have to fall prey to the mistaken belief that they had to take responsibility for anothers action. If we began to live without the need to control or be controlled then when we did interact or come together it would be in strength and in positive collaboration.

It is instinctual! Through out evolution we have made progress but it is still about mine and not yours. Just look at animals for instance. 1 Lion has the pride and it is based upon survival of the fittest! For the most part humans want to control everything and own everything. If we don't have control then we feel worthless.

insecurity...this comes from the ego...ANY kind of control comes from our ego...from our defenses to our selfishness
