A bank has to make some of the money available to you right away. Usually $100. The other, they make sure the check is good before they let you access it. It take a couple days.

Most banks hold checks between 2 and 5 business days before the funds can be made available as a security feature to protect you and the bank in case the check is not good. If you are a new customer or if the check is large (usually over $5000) then you are looking at the longer time frame also if you deposit moeny in the ATM (which I do not recommend ever doing) it will also take longer to be made available. Many of these banks make a small amount available before the full amount of the check so that you do have some funds to use. Also if you deposited more than one check some checks can take longer if they are out of state or it could even be that one of the checks you deposited was not good, the only definitive answer would be to call your bank.

Cash is the only thing that you can deposit and will be cleared right away. It can take the bank up to 14 days to clear any checks that were deposited. Also some banks will only allow a percentage of the amount you put in the bank for you to take out right away.

Only half the check is okay by the bank until the check fully clears. You probably have to wait a week.

If the check you deposited was from someone that goes through a different bank, they will generally only make $100 available to you. The rest of the time they are waiting for the rest of the moeny to clear.
It's not you or your account, its just bank procedure.

If you've had problems with the bank in the past, or if your deposit is unusually large, somethimes they hold the check until it clears. maybe in your case the banks holds half of the funds?
