Mechanically.. The origionality of thunder moves at the instantainiouse strike of the madd-infuriouse tomocaliouse. If you know what I'm saying in simplist formation of the incriments of 5 per vision. So in conclusion every 5 seconds of the lightning until you hear the thunderous booms with the immaculate ferocious inperfection, is every mile.

When you see a lightning strike. count the seconds by saying 1 Mississippi, 2Mississippi and so on. If you hear thunder in 5 seconds it is one mile. Sound such as thunder takes 5 seconds to travel a mile. A trick to it to count the total seconds and divide by five is the seconds are not divisible by 5 (17sec/5 = 17/5 =3 2/5 seconds). Light travels much much faster than sound.

When you see lightning strike, start counting seconds. Then listen for the thunder. Make sure you listen for the correct peal of thunder, and not one from a different lightning strike.

For each second that elapses between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder, the lightning was about 0.21 miles away. So, if 5 seconds elapse, it's about 1 mile away.

light travels faster than sound. therefore you see the flash first and then hear the sound. Here is a quick chart for figuring distance.

If Thunder is heard The Lightning is...
5 seconds after a Flash 1 mile away
10 seconds after a Flash 2 miles away
15 seconds after a Flash 3 miles away
20 seconds after a Flash 4 miles away
25 seconds after a Flash 5 miles away
30 seconds after a Flash 6 miles away
35 seconds after a Flash 7 miles away
40 seconds after a Flash 8 miles away

You count from the time you see the lightning. Light travels much faster than sound. The light arrives almost instantly. The sound takes almost 5 seconds to travel 1 mile.
