Come on, surely you've realised that stamp duty is a direct assault on those who aspire to progress in life and better themselves. That smacks in the face of everything that this totalitarian dictatorship of a government stands for. Let's hit those who dare to get off their backsides and work, they're fair game after all. If you're mega rich, Labour ensures you pay no tax at all, if you've never worked in your life and have no intention of ever doing so, they'll pander to you.

This tax is nothing about fair taxation, it's simply about taxing those who aspire to have a decent place to live and bring up a family.

Be careful what you wish for.

Second homes already come under the scope of Capital gains Tax, which given the current rate of House Inflation mean we would be worse off if it applied to primary residences too.

Every time money changes hand the government wants a cut. Sad but true.

If people were that bothered about stamp duty they wouldn't be prepared to pay such astronomical prices for houses. Remember, the housing market is not regulated (in price terms) by the government- it is regulated by the greed of ordinary people.

1% !!! Try 3% My move is costing 9K in stamp duty and 17K in total, now that I've written that down I'm really depressed.
Solicitors are a neccesary evil and I don't begrudge a penny
It's the Estate Agents that appear to get money for old rope!
Lets rebel against them and everyone refuse to pay more than 0.5% then we may see a more stable market.

It could not be easier. Vote this terrible, miserable Scots stealth-taxer out of office. With Brown as PM there will be no reduction in stamp duty.
