Usually between 12-16 months. They learn by imitiaing it. It's best to use a song with clapping to teach this skill.

I would assume that it's part mimicry and part learning on their own. Interaction with babies is probably the key way that they learn to do things and most people make faces, speak in goofy voices, play peek-a-boo and, of course, clap at babies because the baby gives a reaction to it which encourages the adult to interact further. Eventually the baby will begin to mimic the adult because that gets an even bigger reaction from the adult. It's a feedback loop that is created where each person participating (the baby and the adult) is rewarded for their participation and reaction.

I'm not sure when they'd begin to do it on their own. I would assume that they'd learn pretty quick and, as long as they're physically able to, they'll start clapping on their own quite fast. You may have to actually take their hands and help them at first so that they get the idea but I would think it would go pretty quick.

The most important thing though is to play with the baby. Interact with him or her in any way you like and they should do fine.

Good luck!

My son just started clapping his hands about 2 weeks ago. He is 8 months old. DH and I used to clap his hands together and giggle with him, which he always found really funny. Now he claps on his own whenever he sees something funny or something he likes. I think it's the cutest thing ever!

My son started clapping at eleven months, I'm pretty sure that is about average. A baby won't know that they can clap and make noise if they have never seen it. I clapped everytime he did a good job. I also sang him songs when he was in the tub, and I clapped along. Sing, "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands". Clap his hands together yourself so he can know that he can do it too.

They usually clap hands around 7 or 8 months onwards, I always found mine started either by singing songs involoving clapping hands or by cheering and clapping when they had done something clever.

They learn by watching you do it! My son would sorta clap at 6 months and by 9 months he would always do it!! Such as I would clap when he would do something...like if he pushed a button on a toy or whatever!

basically children are sponges, what you do they do. You have to show them or they have to see if for them to learn it. Some actions they will automatically pick up, but most things they copy from others.
