I'm glad to find I'm not the only one struggling to find something to fill the long gap between now and the 7th Harry Potter...

There are quite a few good fantasy-esque books out there, and I'll try to refrain from recommending some stuffy, lame book. However, one of the (well, two, I guess--it has a sequel) best books I've read for a while is called Fablehaven, by Brandon Mull. It, too, has some fantasy placed in the real world, and I found the plot about as exciting as Harry Potter.

So, without further ado, I'll just post a link to Amazon so you can check it out...

Happy reading (and waiting)!

As a Harry Potter lover, I adore the Ender's Game series... I found out that the author of Ender's Game, Orson Scott Card, is a fan of Harry Potter and even contributed to the book "The Great Snape Debate" (he thinks Snape will turn out to be good in the end)

Ender's Game has a lot of the same aspects of Harry Potter... It's about a boy in the future who is extremely intelligent and is recruited into a military school. An alien attack almost wiped out the entire Earth long before Ender was born, and the only thing that stopped them from destroying Earth was a brilliant flight commander. The government is trying to find another brilliant commander, quickly, because the aliens could return at any time.

Ender learns how to be a commander through no-gravity games... he is very successful, but he is also the center of attention, being the youngest to advance past each level. He has the same pressure that Harry does, being the "chosen one" to save the world.

It's a great book on its own, and there is also a series that continues the story. If you're interested, there is also a parallel story called Ender's Shadow, which is the exact same story, but from another character's point of view. Both books are very different and stand alone, but they enhance each other brilliantly!

Hope you find a great book to keep you until next weekend! :)

Twilight and New Moon by Stephenie Meyer. Don't let the vampires scare you off.
A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels by Libba Bray. Victorian era books about Gemma. Fantasy book.
His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Nice, long, fantasy/sci-fi trilogy.
The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer. Wonderful sci/fi book.
Amelia Atwater-Rhodes has a bunch of books out that are good. Kinda short though.
If you want something that isn't fantasy, read any of Ellen Hopkins book and any of Sarah Dessen's books. Those are all good.

i like harry potter. im re-reading them before the 7th comes out, especially the 6th.
one book that i suggest to anyone who asks--alicia, my story by alicia appleman-jurman. it's an autobiography about how she escaped the nazis and survived through the war and stuff. it's amazing! it's nothing like harry potter, but it's a great book.

If you've read the series and liked it, why not go back and re-read them. I'm sure that you will find interesting details of the story that passed you by the first time.
