"'This is not a midpoint of operations in Baghdad, but really the very beginning,' Snow said."

When is the beginning of this years long occupation going to turn into the "middle" of the occupation? Didn't we get through the beginning, middle and end of WWII within the amount of time we have already been in Iraq?

Doesn't have quite the ring of, "This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

A war is a process. It begins with one event, though that even can often extend over days or weeks.

But the US occupation of Iraq is a not a war, not in any legal sense of the word. We are there under an authorization for the use of military force. And apparently, Snow (or Bush) thinks this is only the beginning of our use of military force.

The "beginning" is usually defined by those conducting the war; this definition may be altered to suit their needs.

The beginning of a war in reality is very short--the time it takes to shoot one gun or swing one sword.

Poor Tony...cancer and an inept president to try and defend every day...you have to think the guy wishes he was back doing the news again.
