Prenatal vitamins are like an insurance policy. You are ensuring that your baby gets all the vitamins and nutrition it needs to grow healthy and strong. They help when your eating days are not so healthy. If you can take them it is the only way to go.

However, for some reason or another some women just can't take them. You might be one of those women. But, if at all possible, take the prenatal vitamins.

If you are fortunate, nothing will happen, everything will go fine.

But for a few who don't, you risk running the chances of having a baby with a form of birth defect. Some range spinal disorders to brain damage.

If you can't afford the vitamins, tell your doctor or midwife, even the health clinic should be able to supply you with some. If not there, just eat very healthy. You can google "pregnancy diet" and find what you can eat with the vitamins in a prenatal vitamin.

Best wishes to ya!

Prenatal vitamins are to help pregnant women suppliment the nurtients that they need that they might not be getting thru their regular diets. Folic acid, iron and some other nutrients are very important to the growth and developement of the baby, and the vitamins give assurance that enough it being consumed.

Is there a reason you would not want to take them? If you don't have insurance, you can still get the over the counter. If they make you sick, you can get chewable ones.

I'm sure nothing would happen... I do believe the vitamins are more for you then for the baby. They help replace some of the nutrients the baby is taking from you. If you don't like the prenatals then you can take 2 flintstone vitamins... I took them throughout my whole pregnancy! They do the same job! Good Luck!

Women went for thousands of years without taking prenatal vitamins. The vitamins are really more for you than the baby. The baby will suck everything it needs out of you, so if you don't have enough in you, it will just take your share. Getting enough folic acid is very important though to prevent birth defects, but you can get it from your food... I would recommend taking them, but if you can't don't feel extremely guilty. Just try to eat as many fruits and veggies as possible. Especially green veggies like spinach... Good Luck!

Wouldn't you want to do everything you could to ensure the health of your baby? You don't usually get all the nutrients you need out of your food so you should take a prenatal vitamin and even before you are pregnant you should take folic acid - prevents spinabifida and brain injuries.

Prenatal vitamins are to be taken for many reasons. For instance they are taken to ensure that your iron levels don't become low. They help with constipation, and they help fight against spinal birth defects. They also give your baby a dose of vitamins that it needs to build strong bones, muscles and tissues. However, you can also take 2 flintstones vitamins in place of prenatals.

You don't have to take prescription prenatals. I never did. I took five over-the-counter folic acid pills a day, plus other vitamins. I wrote down everything I was taking and gave the list to my doctor and he approved of it. Lack of folic acid can cause spinal bifida.

Your child will have the chance to be born with Spina Bifida, or another disease.

Take the vitamins. Don't live to regret it for the rest of your life. And, for the rest of your child's...
