AGAINST.
I don't see why everyone's trying to change the definition of marriage. Marriage is between ONE MAN and ONE WOMAN. THE END! Don't complicate it!
Next thing we know, they'll try to B.S. their way into legalizing a marriage between a man and a rabbit... or a woman and a stapler...

I'm not a lesbian either, and frankly I don't care if gays marry it won't affect me in the least, I'm married to the same man for 28 years and hard as I try, I just can't find my self threatened by it, nor do I find it to be trivializing of marriage.
I can see that it might offend some religions, so I wouldn't make it a law that clergy must marry someone, but there isn't a law now that says that all clergy must marry any one.
I was married by a judge, I'm married, let the state decide it and let same sex marriage be subject to the same rules present marriages are. If someone rejects it on religious grounds that's fine with me, I don't belong to that religion. I don't believe in secular law mixing with sectarian law. I don't want sectarian law to prohibit anything in secular law.
My husband and I never had children together, and some couples are infertile, does that mean they lose the right to marry? Again the religious arguments, God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve, hold fast to your religious beliefs if that's what you want, and don't marry the same sex, but don't prohibit by law those who want to.
My personal belief is that people marry because we have a deep seated need to be loved by one special person, even arranged marriages hope for fondness. The rights of inheritance and next of kin are other reasons, but I think that as a species we need that specialness of just one other.

First off God created man and woman, male and female God also ordained marriage between a man and a woman. When the world was destroyed two animals of each kind male and female were on the ark to replenish the earth two males or two females cannot bear or bring forth children. If being gay or a lesbian was okay God never would have destroyed an entire city where such acts were taking place. Yes he does love everyone, but that is an act he will not and does not tolerate. If I am offending anyone I don't mean to :) I think there is something wrong when two people prefer the same sex. I did an internship in college for social work, most of the people I talk too in this sitiuation were abused as children my someone of the same sex, or was dumped. I think marriage is honorable and I still hold fast that it was and is still intended for man and woman.

I am for it.. I'm sick of hearing all these people say the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. Where??? In the Bible?? Because, excuse me, I am a Christian, but I believe that America was founded on the belief that state and religion are separate. How dare other people shove their beliefs on someone else and expect them to believe the same thing? It's morally wrong. And I think it's wrong that people are so bored or unhappy with their lives that they have to try to dictate the way other people live. And for the person who said its wrong because they aren't able to have children- If you're going to make that point, you can also say an infertile woman and man shouldn't be married because they can't have children.
O and Doug?? Your argument just sickens me.. I believe that you are being very judgemental and isn't that the EXACT OPPOSITE of the teachings of major religions???

Okay, I am opposed to gay marriage. I believe the definition of marriage is between a man and a woman. From a religious standpoint, to alter that definition would be wrong in my eyes.
However, I believe that homosexual life partners should not be without the legal "perks" from marriage, so in my opinion, in all ways short of actual legal wedding/marriage, they should be considered the same as a married couple. Tax breaks, work benefits, power of attorney, being able to adopt, etc. should be allowed for committed life partners. I just can't bring myself to say that they are actually "married."
Anyone who argues that the next thing will be a marriage between a person and an animal, or a person and an object, are just being ignorant. In a gay marriage, the only difference between a gay partner and a straight partner is a matter of reproductive organs. They are two human beings, each able to love one another (an animal doesn't love the person romantically) and each able to express that love (also not something that happens with animals).
If gay marriage does become legal, I wouldn't lobby to get that reversed, though. If people who oppose it on a religious standpoint are right and it is a sin, they should trust in God to deal with it later. Until then, in this life, let them do as they will.

I agree with gay and lesbian marriage. Unfortunately its not viewed as holy and sacred as it used to be. Straight people have been screwing it up for quite some time now, the divorce rate is out of control, so why not let the gay and lesbian community give it a try!

marriage was made by god to be between a woman and a man. Just because the government and society has given benefits to those that are married, does not mean we need to change the meaning of marriage just so the gays and lesbos get those benefits. Instead there should be something different than marriage for those who want to cashin on benefits like married people. I can see that they would like something in place for many reasons. Contracts could take care of the Financial side of the problem. If two same sex need something more to show their commitment they could have a contract that says that they have become united at this date and all property attained by either person was 50% the others. As far as health care, instead of being based on marrage, they should just change it to household and dependents. As far as a cerimony that can be when the contract is signed by both persons and instead of a preacher you could have lawers.

I am a Christian yet I am not against gay marriage and I'll tell you why. There are 2 types of marriage ceremonies - those grounded in a religion and those that are civil (legal ceremonies). The framers of the Constitution clearly did NOT want religion and government to overlap. I believe Churches have every right to turn away gay couples because that is their own belief - they shouldn't be MADE to marry them. BUT I do think it's fine for the government to allow civil unions giving gay couples the legal rights of others who have committed their lives to one another.
That's just my opinion.

For
What's the big deal about marriage anyway? They only want to be happy and have the same rights as everyone else. Prejudice runs far too rampant in this country, either whites hating blacks ( or any other race than white for that matter) , or homophobes, you people make this world an awful place to live. Besides, me and my stapler are in love, what rights do you have to take that away form me lol!

I am against gay marriage. The definition of marriage is a binding commitment between a male and a female. Not two people of the same sex, if you're gay whatever, but I wish the marriage debate would end. Let their be a new word or type of commitment for homosexuals, similar to a marriage but not a marriage.
Theres just somethings certain people can't have. Short people can;t ride certain rides at Six Flags, tall people can;t fit into small places. The Chicago Cubs can;t get a world series, and gays can not have marriage.

My opinion:
Why get married to anyone? I asked this question here on yahoo, and no one could tell me a valid reason to get married. Many say so your right by god. Well if your lesbian or gay then that wouldn't matter in this case would it.
tax reasons? I was married once, and never benefited tax Wise.
Cheaper insurance? come on give me a better reason than that
Medical? you can add a spouse to your insurance. So what, they can get an individual policy too.
I am not against gay/lesbian marriage. I would however, like to know why someone wants to get married.
