This question, or something like it, is asked a lot. The answer is obviously because soccer is not nearly as popular a sport in the U.S. as it is everywhere else on earth. So, in a nation with millions of immigrants who love soccer, visiting teams can often draw more support.
I don't think the caliber of the national team has anything to do with it. The U.S. national team just won the Gold Cup (by beating Mexico not China or Denmark) and most Americans are unaware of this fact. The U.S. women's team is the dominate team in world soccer and get little recognition and the U.S. U20 team just beat Brazil in a very entertaining match; how many Americans are even aware of this?
On the bright side, the sport is gaining in popularity as is the strength of the national team. If the trend continues we might actually get a home field advantage in our own country.

there just isn't enough coverage on the sport in this country, you never hear about how the us beat Mexico in the gold cup or how our u-20 beat Brazil the other day. its really sad and breaks my heart that the people in my country don't seem to care as much. whenever my friends find out that i love soccer, yes i called it soccer because that's what its called here in my country, they make fun and ask why don't you support a real sport. i tell everyone i know that there is more to soccer then what they may think and i guarantee that if they all watch an actual game from start to finish they will see why it is called the beautiful game. i have turned people onto soccer just by explaining to them the passion that the fans have for the sport. if only the u.s. could bring awareness to the people of just how great this sport is and how great our national team really is, maybe one day people from other countries wont accuse us of cheating when we win another great team. its all about bring awareness to the American people. i believe one day soccer will be just as popular in the u.s as it is in the rest of the world. there just needs to be more coverage on the television for the American people to watch.

1. The support was more like 75-25 (or 80-20 at worst). Average Mexican fan was just louder than an average American at the game.
2. A lot of Americans wanted to buy tickets to that game but they were sold out fast, thanks to the Mexican fans. So having a pro-Mexican crowd at the game doesn't necessarily mean Americans wouldn't show up or don't support their team. It just means the Mexicans are more dedicated in following theirs.
3. Have you seen the crowd in Columbus the few times we played Mexico? There were 25,000 fans and 90% of them were US supporters.
Edit: Another point: We have pro-US crowd whenever we play most of the other countries.

I am a Portuguese Canadian and know that Portugal is in a different class and actually has a chance to win.(despite 2 losses and an injured captain) A team with heritage, success and history will always be more popular than one that is still developing it's youth and scouting program. When Canada and the USA can compete on the world stage, I will be supporting them.
Great win against Brazil in FIFA U20 on Sunday----go USA

The primary reason that in general immigrants, both legal and illegal, are more passionate soccer fans than the established American residents. Most of these immigrants remain loyal to the old country than to the new one. Also many of the latin immigrants prefer to remain spanish speaking, and do watch a lot of soccer on Univision and Telemundo, so their focus and attention are toward their old heroes.

The audience was not 95% Mexican fans. Mexican fans are just louder. If the audience were 95% Mexican fans, that means that only 2,000 U.S. fans showed up and it was way closer to 10,000.

I'm not exactly American but I support the team whenever they play [it depends though] because they are the underdogs and everybody in the world thinks they are terrible. It's not even true! And the players are really nice guys if you get to know them personally. They aren't stuck up and realize how people perceive them. I like them, they are down to earth.

Anytime the US plays, of course I root for them. I'll root for them until they lose and get eliminated.
About 6 years ago, I went to the Orange Bowl to watch the US vs Argentina in a friendly and you're right, they were more people there rooting for Argentina then for the US, it was quite weird.

because americans would rather be in the live audience of "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?" than be in the presence of the crappiest team on the international stage. You guys have an impressive home record...against china.....and denmark........and guatemala? uh yea good competition.
