It would all depend on the type of thyroid cancer your mom had. Most thyroid cancer does not have any relationship to a family history. However, if your mom had medullary thyroid cancer, there is a chance you may get it also.

If this is what your mom had, have your mom ask her doctor about ordering genetic counseling for you. Genetic counseling would be able to determine whether or not you are at risk. Good luck!
