You will be stopped and questioned in Ohio and Wisconsin about it but it's not a hard and fast law. In Florida, there isn't a front plate at all, so it passes through other states with no problem. It's the ones that issue front and back that they ask about. (My son lost the front plate off his truck and was stopped only once to be asked about it.)

US west coast cowboys in California, must have them on the front and back of our trucks.
The state uses a huge network of cameras in select intersections to help ease the amount of patrol cars needed. Requiring plates on both the front and back make it easier for "THE MAN" , "Johnny Law" , "5-0" to track us down, if we just happen to do something wrong or are a witness to someone doing something wrong.
And yes, in California you can get in trouble for just seeing something bad happen.

Here in Texas, you have to have one on the back and the front. ALSO, You cannot have the name "Texas" covered by any vanity license plate cover. You will get a ticket. It happened to me. I had to show the judge the plate cover that I took off of my plate. My ticket was dropped. Yeah, I know that is totally retarded. Texas is big and beautiful, but the lawmakers can be weirdos at times. They love to collect your money.

Yes, here in Texas we are, but when I traveled through New Mexico into the mountains I was surprised to see the cars only had their front plate.
