1) getting rid of the Puritans. A Puritan faction in England was becoming a major threat to the Anglican Church which supported the Crown. Therefore, a far away land could be used to sent the unwanted types out.
2) Natural resources - "New World" the land full of gold etc. that version of the story has always been attractive to Europeans. This is after all one of the reasons why Columbus set for his journey 2 centuries earlier.
3) And finally, a rather religious reasons. Puritans have long been nurturing an idea of a New Jerusalem. A plaec which would be reminiscent of a Zion for the Jews. For many, the "New World" seemed to be just such a place. Thats why in Us, especially in the North-Eastern parts, there s all these New Salems, Babylons etc. This all comes from the Puritan and Qacker pillgrims who thought they at last found their Holy Land.

if making an impression on your transcript is what you're after, AP US History would be the way to go. Because the class covers a detailed amount of history, it will most likely be 2 semesters, whereas AP US Gov't will most likely be only one. If ease is your motivation, AP US Gov't will be the class to choose because AP US History requires endless reading. If it's interest that you're after, AP US Gov't will be the class for you because you learn about the government structure and laws and court cases that can or will affect you. However, AP US History could cover those things for you as well, as it covers these events chronologically, mixed with wars and presidents and policies as well. And enjoyability. AP US Government is by far more enjoyable, as it is the least stressful of the two. Requiring basic memorization as opposed to complex and convoluted memorization from reading about history, AP US Government will make your year the least hectic. So really consider what you want from the class. If you want 2 semesters of an AP class, consider AP US History, but beware of the amount of work you set yourself up for. If you can handle it, by all means take AP US History. If you want an easier and enjoyable class, however, AP US Gov't will be the class for you. But realize that this will probably count for only one semester for an AP class and that AP US Gov't is often regarded as a lesser AP course than AP US History due to its relatively small informational content.

#1 GOLD. The Virginia colony was established to find gold and they almost all died the first winter due to lack of shelter and adequate food. The English had been jealous of Spanish gold for over a hundred years and wanted their own supply.
They kept the colony for its timber & timber products (like pitch, tar, resin) since England had little land for timber for its vast fleets.
#2 To keep the Dutch, Spanish, and French from getting hold of it.
#3 A place to send people who were 'different'. Back then, being an orphan, prostitute, debtor, etc... landed you in jail! Not much room in England and Australia was far away. So this was a place to dump prisioners and let alternate religions go away to.

1. To grab raw materiels for the Commonwealth.
2. To keep said materials from the enemies of that Sceptered Isle (Spain, France, the Netherlands, Sweden).
3. To Convert all Non-Anglicans on that continent.
4. To find gold, and steal it from said Non-Anglicans.
They later realized the value in having a new markets for their goods in the New World, as well as a place to put "undesirables" such as non-anglicans and poor people. However, those 4 reasons were the originals.

ANY good history book will give you your answers, even the one you were assigned to read and apparently did not. Don't rely on others to do YOUR work.
