You can get more for Howard than Brad Penny. Penny has been a beast thus far, but you only have to look back one season to see how Penny can fall apart after the all-star break. Last year Penny went 10-2 with a 2.91 ERA before the break and fell to 6-7 with a 6.25 ERA post break. The only SP of equal value for Howard is Johan Santana. If you are really desperate for an SP you could deal Howard for Peavy, Brandon Webb, Roy Oswalt or maybe Cole Hamels. Honestly Howard has more value than any of them, so I'd probably look for another player to deal in order to increase your starting pitching.

I know it can be tempting to go foward with a trade when you need a pitcher, someone like penny is having such a phenominal year and howard isn't matching up to the bonnafide stats many thought he would reproduce. But these two players are heading in the opposite direction, Howard is a career .293 hitter which puts him inline for a huge second half. Penny is clearly overachieving, and unless hes totally turned a new leaf at 29, you can only expect his production to decline. Howard is on the rise, Penny on the decline. Don't let this guy try to take Howard from you with a pitcher who just had a really great first half. You made the right move getting Howard from the beginning, its annoying but if your patient you'll see you made the right choice all along in getting and keeping howard.

After coming off the DL Ryan Howard has played well. As you said Brad Penny isnt a great second half pitcher. If you need a sp look for Lackey or Bedard.

Don't trade Howard! I have him in one of my Yahoo leagues, and spent a 1st round pick (#4 overall) to get him. Yeah, he's fallen on tough times lately, but still has 38 RBI over his last 36 games. Unless you have a team stacked with power, I'd hold on to him....especially considering his career Post-All Star break average is nearly 60 points higher. If you're going to trade him, don't go for Penny. If you recall, Penny started off 10-2 before the break last year, just to go 6-7 and more than DOUBLE his ERA after the break. Find a more reliable name, or offer less for Penny. Good Luck, hope this was helpful.

That really seems like a ton to give up because Howard potentially will be swinging a big stick in the second-half to put the Phillies in the playoffs. But if you need a starter, Penny may be the way to go, because - again - he will be an important hurler every fifth day for the Dodgers and their playoff hopes. It is a reluctant deal based on real need.

I would say keep Howard and attempt to trade him for a better pitcher. Penny has never had a good 2nd half and probably never will.
