I had bronchitis a few years ago and due to the incessant coughing, my lower ribs (the ones on the side only connected to the ribs above them by cartilage, not to the breastbone) were separated. Since then they've healed abnormally; one of the lower ones slipped behind an upper one and healed there, so the tip of the upper one protrudes slightly. This has happened on both sides.

Does anyone know if this can be corrected in any way? It doesnt interfere with my lifestyle or anything, and it only starts hurting again when I catch a bug that makes me cough alot (or when I run long distances), but many people say theres nothing I can do about it. Are they right?

Professional/educated opinions appreciated.

My dear friend, we have 12 pair of ribs in which only 7 ribs are true ribs, means ther anterior and posterior ends are attached to sternum and spinal vetebrae respectively , rest are either attached to thes 7 ribs or there one end is freely hanging.Overall, you are absoultely normal , no need to worry, if you have chest pain, than it has some other origin.
