over the past 7 years, i've noticed all elements of american politics have been lumped into 2 camps:

democrats vs republicans
liberals vs conservatives
good vs evil
right vs wrong
us vs them

and so on..

has all political thought been reduced to us vs them and black vs white?

and why all the team politics?

i don't understand why everything has to be lumped into two sets of generalities. nothing is ever that simple. nothing.

Because it is often much easier to lump your adversary under a label, and then just attack the label, than to actually debate the underlying issues on their merits.

Sadly, this type of polarization is ever increasing -- as people spend more time attacking "the other side" and less time actually addressing the issues and trying to find solutions.

Values/Principles/Actions are based on what are called "Core Values"..or a set of finite "Truths" that one bases His/Her life on.

To those of us with strong versions of these "Core" values, It's usually easy to determine on which side of our "Line" the "Thing" falls.

(An Example for My Values:)
Execution of a mass murderer = OK.
Abortion of infant (Unless it would cause the mothers death, Etc.) = Bad

It was just an example, and there are "Gray" areas....there has to be....I'm not religious, I am a Realist. No one can predict >every< situation.

But If people are honest, and fairly logical, things become (Generally) quite clear.

It is only when Political Correctness, ignorance, or plain stupidity Rear their ugly heads that things become cloudy.

Look inside, the answers you seek are there.....they always have been.

Look at the rhetoric, "you are either with us or against us." Any disagreement is "you hate the troops" or "you're not patriotic". It seems like these days no one can get beyond binary thinking. I completely agree with you.

I kind of think that it's always been this way in politics. It just seems like it gets worse every year.

I completely agree with you. Life is all about gray areas, and if we continue to try to make it black and white we'll end up disappointed. However, a lot of people group things together to rally more support for a certain cause.

I believe it was the conservatives that started the split of a nation. Now it is everyday lingo when talking about politics. Instead of addressing the issues, we bash each other. Meantime our fearless leaders have a heyday!
